Daily Journaling for Beginners: Start with 5 Minutes
No full pages or perfect handwriting needed. Three simple questions are enough to start.
Lots of people want to keep a journal, but stop because they feel it has to be long and neat. Actually, five minutes a day is enough.
Three 5-minute questions
Every night, answer these three questions in a sentence or two:
- What’s one thing that made me happy today?
- What did I learn today?
- What’s one small thing I want to do tomorrow?
That’s it. Nothing more needed.
Turning it into a habit
- Attach it to another habit. For example, journal right after brushing your teeth at night.
- Keep your tools in one place. A notebook and pen by your pillow, or a notes app on your home screen.
- Use a sticker as “today’s mood”. No time to write? Just place the one sticker that matches how you feel. It still counts!
When you don’t know what to write
Write the smallest thing you remember: how your morning tea tasted, the song stuck in your head, or a cloud shaped like an axolotl (you never know!). Small things often become the nicest memories to read later.
A journal isn’t a place to be perfect. It’s a place to be honest with yourself. 🌙
